So the Residents released “Arkansas” this month. Where “Postcards from Patmos” was a soundtrack to the internet series, “Arkansas” gives us the missing pieces to “The Bunny Boy”. Mostly different versions, songs performed but not on the album, and songs entirely cut. Like TBB it works very well, the good songs are very good and the very good songs are excellent, the stand out for me being ‘Circe’. It’s probably the best the singing Rez has sounded in the modern era. It’s funny how the tour show sort of closed off TBB for me, not that I quit listening to the album or anything, but it slipped from the mind and other things came to the fore front. Then they released “Is Anybody out There” which collected the internet series into an edited down version. I got sucked back in to the uncomfortably funny and sad world of Bunny, and it pretty much got me back into the whole project. So once again, thanks Residents, for depressing me with really good music…

Long post on Transformers 2

    <lj:music>Neil Young - We R In Control</lj:music>

<o:smarttagtype name="PlaceName" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype name="place" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype>
So I saw Transformers 2 this weekend. The faults the first film suffered from are only expanded in the sequel. Less plot, an increase in bad acting by characters we don’t care about, special effects that are far too busy, poor soundtrack, it’s a thinly disguised add for the military, etc.

It’s just a plain bad movie, which stinks. Not that I liked the first film, far from it, but I felt there were things that could have been done to redeem and justify the first. What we get instead is just a retread of the first film with less plot and with a few different scenes.

The designs of the Autobots and Decepticons still don’t work. When I can’t tell a head from the ass until I see “lips” moving doesn’t bode well for what the director is trying to do. This flaw could have easily been dealt with had the Transformers gone a “reformatting” into designs that more closely resemble their animated counterparts. You could explain this change as having to do with their wanting to be easier relate to their human counterparts, but no.

The robot forms are not helped by the fact that only 2 or 3 of the Transformers have a personality. Every time I hear Ironhide or Rachet speak, I’m not sure which one is speaking unless I see one of their anus-mouths moves. At least there are only a small number of Autobots that get lost due to lack of personality or lines. The Decepticons suffer worse, because there are more on screen. Megatron and Starscream are virtually identical in design and character, the main “villain” is sadly just another cookie-cutter bad guy bent on revenge, you have Soundwave but with no effects on his voice, which wrecks his character, and then there is Devastator. What could have been a true moment of terror and scale, is reduced down to vehicles molesting each other until they turn into an ape-bot which does very little and is treated horribly by the script.

But let’s not forget about the humans. Or better, lets. The crap actors from the last film have only been given more screen time making for even more cringe worthy lines. Nothing redeeming can be said for the “real” actors of the film, and sadly Megan Fox has been reduced down to a special effect. Not that her acting was anything better before, but she’s eye candy now, and the next film will probably never allow her to be anything more.

I’d speak about continuity, plot, and related things, but they don’t exist in this film.

Now let me say this. There was one thing I enjoyed, Optimus Prime. With the exception of a few lines, his character was pretty good. His look still sucks, but a few of his scenes gave him the weight needed for someone of his stature. It’s a shame it’s wasted and devoured by this film.

There were plenty of things that could have made this film work. Probably things Michael Bay and people on this film couldn’t or wouldn’t do, but once again, too much focus on humans, little screen time for the titular species, and so on and so on made this celluloid pain.
